Important information About the Iron Ring Ceremony When and where is the Ceremony? Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 4:00 PM (MIE and ECE) and 7:00 PM (BCE and SOEN)
Holiday Inn Montreal Midtown
420 Sherbrooke W - Map
When should I arrive at the Holiday Inn?
  • If you are receiving your ring, you should arrive approximately 30 minutes before the ceremony to obtain your documents and get your seat assigned. Late comers will not be admitted. The reception will be going on for guests during and after the ceremony.
  • Will there be parking? You can try to find parking in the area, but it will be quite busy. The Holiday Inn provides underground valet service at $12 per vehicle, if you cannot find any other parking.

    How much do tickets cost?
    • $40 for the ring recipients ($15 for the registration and $25 for the seat; this includes your mentor's ticket).
    • $20 for the first guest.
    • $20 for the second guest.
    • $25 for each additional guest (parents, spouse, friends).
    • The tickets are non-refundable.
    • Note: There is no fee for children under 6, and tickets for children 6-12 are only $13 each.
    • There is no limit on the number of guest tickets you can purchase. After the deadline, however, tickets will be $25 each, regardless of the number of guests.
Can I get a refund for my tickets? As stated on all tickets, they are NON-REFUNDABLE.
When do I pick up my tickets? From now until the day of the ceremony.
What if I want more tickets later on? You can purchase extra tickets in the ECA office, H-838 between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Who can attend the ceremony? Only students and mentors can attend. Other than students, if you have not been obligated as an engineer, you cannot enter. If a guest does not have their iron ring, they will be denied entrance.
Who can be a mentor? The mentor must have spent more than 3 years as an obligated engineer. The same mentor can give the ring to several recipients.
What does my mentor need to know for the ceremony? At a certain point in the ceremony, the mentors will have to accompany the candidates on stage according to their program. Please follow the list of names appearing on the screen.

Each candidate will be called quickly according to their program and in alphabetical order. When you will be called, you will go on stage with your mentor and your ring (which will be in the envelope that you will be given before the ceremony). You will then give your mentor the ring and he/she will put it on your small finger. What if you do not have a mentor the day of the ceremony? You can ask one of the wardens or other engineers present at the ceremony to give you your ring and they will be happy to do so. What is the dress code? Semi-formal attire. NO JEANS! What do I do if my ring is the wrong size? You can contact Sophie Merineau for details: merineau@encs.concordia.ca. How long is the ceremony? Approximately 1 hour, followed by a 1 hour reception. When is the reception? There will be a reception during and after the ceremony. Guests can attend the reception while the ceremony is going on. Do I have to attend the ceremony to get my ring? Absolutely. This is a serious Canadian tradition going back many years. The ring is not jewelery, it is a part of your solemn oath as an engineer. I'm graduating Summer 2010, can I still attend the ceremony in April? Yes. If you are taking your final courses this coming summer, you can attend the April ceremony. I'm graduating Fall 2010 or later, can I still attend the ceremony in April? No. All applications must be approved by Student Services. They will only approve your application if you are graduating this semester or in the summer semester. All of my friends are graduating. Can I get my ring too? I don't want to get it without my friends. Just the same way the university does not give you your diploma early, the Seven Wardens will not give you your ring early. While this has not been strictly enforced in the past, it will be vigilantly enforced now. If this semester or the summer semester are not your last semester, then you will be REJECTED. NO EXCEPTIONS. No excuses will be accepted. How many credits do I need to attend the ceremony? You must be an undergraduate student in good standing, expecting to complete your requirements for the B. Eng. by the end of the summer. This will be verified by Student Academic Services when you apply. How and when will I find out if my application has been approved? Normally, 2 weeks after the deadline to apply, check the ECA website for a list of approved candidates. What if my application is not approved? You will be refunded your money, and are encouraged to reapply once you have completed your studies. Is this graduation? No. Graduation is when you receive your degree. Does this make me an Engineer? Absolutely not.

If you have any other questions, e-mail the VP Academic, Harley Cooper, at academic@ecaconcordia.ca.
